A storytelling platform to make Black maternal health safer, more human, and more heard. I focused on Black Maternal Health but a platform like this could essentially help all women of color going through racial/ethnic related experiences during their pregnancy
The Project Aim
- To identify the gaps within prenatal care and possibly
risk assessment which may relate to the negative experiences that Black pregnant women have during pregnancy
- To offer recommendations on how health care professionals can utilize a racially, culturally patient centered approach to prenatal care in order to improve the negative experiences for Black pregnant women.
The Problem
Black women in the UK are significantly more at risk during pregnancy and childbirth — not only due to clinical issues but because of systemic neglect, bias, and silencing in medical environments.
- Black women are 4x more likely to die during childbirth than white women
- Many report feeling unheard or dismissed by healthcare professionals
- Hospital systems lack spaces for emotional expression or cultural understanding
- Patients often carry the burden of educating their care providers
- No safe, structured way exists for healthcare professionals to hear, reflect, or change
